Having the kids here gives us a lift, they are such fun to be around. We’d love to have them visit again.

Evaluating our impact

During 2019/20 we were lucky to work with Dr Ali Somers, an expert in intergenerational evaluation and practice, to measure the social impact of our programmes for participants and communities.

The report found InCommon’s work to be successful in building more connected and age friendly communities, in reducing loneliness and isolation among older volunteers, and in enabling primary school children to gain self-confidence.

Here's what some of our participants have said:

Coming here (the retirement home) is different from the classroom. I like being with the old people, I’ve learnt lots about what it’s like to be old.
— Alex, 8 years old
I like how we can talk and communicate and explore different people’s point of view.
— Stef, 7 years old

The children really made us laugh, and hugged me when they left. They left as my friends now.
— Betty, 85 years old
We’ve seen a real improvement in the children that have been coming here. Before their first session, they were a bit nervous. But they really love coming here. Especially the shyer ones, they speak up so much more when they’re here; their confidence has definitely grown. And it’s really changed how they see older age.
— Fiona Cullen, Teacher, St Winifred's Primary
